ENTRY FEE: £690
The entry fee for the Mongol Rally includes the most excellent spread of Adventurists magic the mind could imagine.
We're throwing on such a fantasticle spread of adventurism that it will seep into your very genes and your scull will change into the shape of a pith helmet. Check out what is in store for your good self on the 2010 rally on our What's Going on in 2010 page.
The entry fee is per team. You can squeeze five people in your car to make it cheaper if you like. You might regret that in the Kazakh desert though.
VISAS: £500 - £180
This is the expensive part of the game and it is per person. It does depend on which countries you choose to tackle. We run a visa service for ralliers who are residents in the UK which is much cheaper than other visa agency services and rather good at bagging the tricky visas such as Turkmenistan.
PETROL: £??
Depends on the vehicle and the current price of oil! It's likely to be fairly economical with sub 1 litre car. Once outside of Europe petrol costs generally work out less than half the cost of what you'd pay at home normally the trip across Europe costs as much as the rest of the trip.
FOOD: £100 ish
Depends on how fat you are and how much you like hunting or eating road kill. Roadside cafe's for much of the journey will be able to provide a hearty mutton dish for about $1.
VEHICLE DEPOSIT: TBC - refundable
We take a FULLY REFUNDABLE vehicle deposit from the teams before the launch. This is to ensure that the correct procedure is followed when importing the vehicles into Mongolia. It would also be used to cover costs incurred by us should you do something very illegal elsewhere en route.
Provided you follow local law and the instructions for the vehicles in Mongolia, you will receive your deposit back. |
VEHICLE
You'll be needing one of these. This really depends on how much you want to spend. Many team's in the past have had vehicles donated however 10 year old 1 litre vehicles can be picked up on ebay for between £300 and £1000.
REPAIRS
This will depend on your mechanical know-how and how many spares you carry. There could come a point beyond all repair where you need to buy a camel to carry on. At current market prices the going rate for camels is 1/8 of a wife.
BRIBES
It is very unlikely that you will get to Mongolia without being asked to oil the palms of lots of Policemen. It's often possible to get away without paying by being sneaky.
RETURN JOURNEY
Once again it depends on the choices you make. Flying back could cost as little as £350 from Ulan Baatar. You could take the Trans Siberian Railway chicken class for a lot less, or drive back, or walk, or stay in Mongolia forever, which would be free.
ACCOMMODATION
Firstly, what are you doing sleeping in hotels when the humble motor car is like a mobile Hilton? However should you go soft in the head and feel the need to lie striaght it depends on how much you want to spend. There are hotels between £5 and £10 in most places.
CHARITY DONATION: £1000
Although this is the largest chunk of cash at £500 pounds each for a two person team (£1000 per car) there is no need to pay this yourself. Put in a bit of work with fund raising and you'll have the cash in no time. |
